Safe Passage: UNRA Secures Pedestrian Routes in Kampala

The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has taken a significant step towards ensuring the safety of pedestrians in the bustling city of Kampala. Concerns had been raised by members of the public regarding the potential risk of attacks by thieves while utilizing pedestrian bridge walkways and concealed areas along the Clock Tower and Nsambya roads.

Addressing these concerns head-on, UNRA’s spokesperson, Allan Ssempebwa, announced today that robust security arrangements had been put in place. Ssempebwa emphasized that the pedestrian routes, including the underground system, would have 24-hour lighting facilities, and enhanced security forces’ patrols would now be conducted in the area.

During a guided media tour of the road section today, January 11, 2024, Ssempebwa explained the rationale behind these security measures. “We have taken into account the high population of pedestrians within the city, combined with numerous vehicles traversing the area daily. Such a situation undoubtedly poses a risk of conflict,” he stated.

To mitigate this risk, UNRA has implemented several measures. Firstly, demarcations have been put in place to ensure pedestrians can cross safely without interfering with vehicular traffic. Additionally, three pedestrian bridges have been installed at key points along the route. These include one in the commercial right area, another at the prominent Clock Tower area, and a third one at Kibuli.

Moreover, UNRA has made extensive provisions to improve pedestrian walkways throughout the city. The road lines have been marked appropriately, emphasizing designated pedestrian areas. This effort aims to guarantee the safety and ease of movement for pedestrians who frequently traverse the city.

Ssempebwa concluded his remarks by assuring the public that these measures reflect UNRA’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of pedestrians in Kampala.

“Our goal is to provide a safe passage for pedestrians, whilst also accommodating the significant vehicular traffic in the city. This initiative will undoubtedly contribute to the overall security and convenience of all road users,” he affirmed.

With UNRA’s proactive approach and the implementation of these security measures, pedestrians in Kampala can now enjoy greater peace of mind as they navigate their way through the city. The concerted efforts of UNRA and the security forces bring a much-needed sense of safety to these vital pedestrian routes.
