Ruto Nominates Kithure Kindiki as Deputy President after Gachagua’s Impeachment

The President of Kenya H.E William Ruto has on October 18, 2024, nominated Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki for the position of Deputy President following the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua.

The Deputy President’s office became vacant after the Senate upheld Gachagua’s impeachment on October 17, 2024.

In a move to fill the role, Ruto forwarded Kindiki’s nomination to the National Assembly for consideration.

On October 18, 2024, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula communicated the President’s decision to MPs, setting the stage for deliberations on Kindiki’s appointment.

Kindiki, who has served as Interior CS and has been widely lauded for his leadership, is now poised to take up the second-highest office in the country, pending parliamentary approval.

Initially, the Senate gazetted the impeachment of Gachagua, declaring the Deputy President’s office vacant.

Speaker Amason Jeffah Kingi officially announced the vacancy in a Gazette Notice dated October 17, 2024

The impeachment was conducted in compliance with constitutional provisions, including Articles 145 (2) and 150 (1)(b) of the Kenyan Constitution.

Gachagua was impeached for violating constitutional provisions, misconduct, and undermining national institutions.
