This year’s Christmas, the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Robert Kyagulanyi, altered his norm of attending mass at Lubaga Cathedral and opted for ‘low-key’ Our Lady of Good Counsel Gayaza Catholic Church.

The switch in churches didn’t come out of nowhere, but as a result of Lubaga Cathedral’s condemnation of homosexuality and homosexuals, who are NUP’s biggest funders.

According to sources, even though Kyagulanyi, who is a gay rights campaigner, is a significant member of Lubaga Cathedral, the Lubaga Catholic Church has been vocal in preaching against homosexuality, which has pushed him to break ties with it.

While delivering his Christmas and New Year’s sermon at Lubaga Cathedral in Kampala on Thursday, December 21, 2023, Archbishop of Kampala Paul Ssemogerere stated that the Roman Catholic Church in Uganda was not going to change the Catholic doctrine and start blessing same-sex marriage.

“I have not gotten communication from the Vatican that the Pope has considered the blessing of same-sex marriage. The teachings of the Catholic Church haven’t changed regarding same-sex marriage,” said Archbishop Ssemogerere.

Kyagulanyi, who has been under pressure from the LGBTQ community in the west for siding with anti-homosexuality campaigners, has been trying to prove his loyalty to them (the LGBTQ community) by sidelining all those who are against homosexuality.

This has been witnessed in the recent reshuffles where he dropped Mathias Mpuuga, who was vocal in the passing of the anti-homosexuality law, from the Leader of Opposition (LOP) in Parliament and replaced him with the inexperienced nonperformer Joel Ssenyonyi.

Analysts believe that Kyagulanyi will continue to take drastic actions to impress the LGBTQ community, which had vowed to cut funding to his party after his Members of Parliament supported the anti-homosexuality act.
