President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has stated that intelligence is critical in military operations, as it helps shape strategic decisions and protect national security.
The president made these remarks on August 15, 2024, during the pass-out ceremony of 298 graduates of the Counter Terrorism Warriors Course Intake 7/2024 and 58 graduates of the Special Operations Tactics Course Intake 1/2024 at the School of Defense Intelligence and Security in Migyera, Nakasongola district.
President Museveni encouraged the newly trained soldiers to strive for personal excellence while warning them against detrimental habits such as promiscuity and alcoholism.
“Intelligence is the eyes, ears, and the nose of the Army. Whenever the Army is deployed, it must know where it is going, what it intends to do, and what to expect,” said President Museveni.
He appreciated the instructors and the institution for upholding high standards essential for success on the battlefield.
Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke, Minister of State for Defense and Veteran Affairs, commended President Museveni for his strategic leadership and dedication to enhancing the capabilities of UPDF through continuous training and professional development.
The minister urged the graduates to honor the legacy of bravery and sacrifice established by their predecessors, who have selflessly served the nation.
“You have earned this honor with hard work, and you will retain it by living the core values of UPDF: loyalty, patriotism, courage, discipline, and teamwork,” said Nyirabashitsi.
Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga, representing the Chief of Defense Forces, reminded the graduates that their training marks the beginning of their ongoing development. He emphasized the necessity of discipline and warned against reckless behaviors that could jeopardize their careers.
Maj Gen James Birungi, Chief of Defense Intelligence and Security, reiterated the high expectations placed upon the soldiers, urging them to perform their duties to the best of their abilities.
Col James Muhumuza, Commandant of the School of Defense Intelligence and Security, said that the training programs are designed to equip soldiers with the skills necessary to conduct specialized missions against terrorist threats and execute complex operations with precision.
“In modern times, terrorism remains a preferred method of creating violence and terror by malicious entities. This training is our humble contribution to combating and ultimately defeating terrorism in Uganda, making our country a safer place to live,” Col. Muhumuza noted.
The pass-out ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including Edith Butuuro, Undersecretary for Finance and Administration; Lt Gen James Mugira, Managing Director of National Enterprise Corporation; Maj Gen Don Nabasa, Commander of the 3rd Infantry Division; and representatives from sister security forces and local government.
