President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Tuesday, November 1st, ordered Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to urgently harmonize the management of all markets within Kampala  metropolitan areas to allow poor people benefit from the facilities.

In his speech to KCCA and market officials during the meeting held at State Lodge Nakasero, President further directed that low income earners should be allowed to own and manage markets instead of the rich.

“Markets should be owned and managed by the low-income earners instead of the rich who in turn charge high fees from wanainchi. The rich can afford doing business on Kampala Road, Ntinda and all the other main roads. As leaders who love their country, you should think about the poor,” he said.

The President also advised KCCA to have two government owned markets and taxi parks in each of the divisions of Kampala emphasizing that they should be occupied and owned by the ordinary Ugandans.

“The people you have been chasing off roads have been saying they have nowhere to go, so if you do not plan for them, where will they go?” he added.

The President tasked the Prime Minister to coordinate with all different stakeholders and come up with a final solution in addressing the challenges.

In her response, the Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja pledged to engage all stakeholders to solve market challenges.

The meeting was attended by State Minister for KCCA and Metropolitan, Affairs Kabuye Kyofatogabye, Local Government Minister, Raphael Magezi, KCCA Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka, Kampala Resident City Commissioner Amina Lukanga, Salim Uhuru, the Kampala Central Division Mayor, among others.
