President Yoweri Museveni has supported the ghetto youth groups of Kampala, Wakiso, and Mukono with around UGX 1.2 billion. The beneficiary SACCO groups include those from Rubaga Kakeeka Zone dwellers, Kasangati Ghetto Community, Kampala Central Division, Nakawa Division, Makindye East, Kawempe South, Makindye West, Kawempe North, Mukono Industrial, Kasokoso, Nansana Division, and Masajja Para Zone Hetto in Makindye.

While meeting Ghetto youth leaders at State House Entebbe on July 31, 2024, President Museveni said that each SACCO will be receiving around UGX 100 million, and from that money they can do something for themselves.

“For those in the villages, we are encouraging people to get involved in inter-commercial farming, but for those in urban settings, we encourage you to get involved in artisanship services such as saloon operating, carpentry, and many others, ’’ President Museveni said.

The Director of Crime Intelligence and the coordinator of these groups, Brig Gen Christopher Ddamulira, said that the ghetto project started under the guidance of President Museveni in March 2022 and that he has been working on it with his team under the leadership of the Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, Hajjat Minsa Kabanda, and the State House Comptroller, Jane Barekye.

“Previously, these ghetto youth, because of idleness, were involved in crimes like riots, robbery, gambling, and others, but with such initiates, such incidents have drastically reduced,” Ddamulira said.

Present was Hajjat Kabanda, who applauded President Museveni for the support towards the ghetto people. She revealed that these people have been trained on how to manage their SACCOs.
