President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has flagged off team Uganda to the World Athletics Championships and the Commonwealth Games.
This was during the ceremony held at Kololo Independence grounds on Monday.
Mr President was also accompanied by first lady, also Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni and Denis Hamson Obua, the Minister of states for sport.
The world athletics championship is slated to take place from 15th -24th July 2022 in Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
More than 1,900 athletes drawn from 192 countries have confirmed participation in this year’s event.
President Museveni appreciated encouraged the team to go for gold medals and maintain maximum discipline.
“If you have talent, do not waste it, part of the problems you here in these organs is lack of team work. I don’t know why people want to monopolize problems,” President said.
He also encouraged them to work in teams and not isolate themselves.
Minister Janet Museveni expects the sports team to be very hardworking since the government has increased their funding.
”Our hope now, is that with government’s commitment of increased funding of the sports sector this new financial year, we expect more from our athletes,” Janet added.
The team that will be departing on Tuesday night will be representing Uganda in different activities like Running, rugby swimming, badminton, boxing, cycling, netball, and weightlifting among others.
