The Uganda police have announced that effective Monday, November 7th, 2022, traffic unit will start conducting operations to apprehend boda-boda operators found violating traffic rules and regulations.
Traffic Police Spokesperson, ASP Farida Nampiima said the operation stemmed from public outcry regarding increased reckless riding exhibited which has resulted into a surge in motor accidents across the country.
The operation will target motorcyclists violating the regulations of Motorcycles 2016 including those riding without helmets for both the rider and passenger, reflector jackets, those carrying more than one passenger, riding license and third party (insurance) among others.
“We urge all Ugandans to cooperate with us and fight the vice of crashes on roads with motorcycles. Motorcycles have become a menace on the roads, for at least four out of five crashes on the road, they are involved,” Nampiima stated.
She says the operation will also target other road users including cyclists, heavy truck drivers, and taxis throughout the festive season.
According to the Uganda Police traffic report, 257 lives were lost mostly out of the boda-boda crashes across the country only in the month of October.
