Police nets Criminal Gang operating around Kampala central business area

A joint security team on Tuesday October 25th carried out an intelligence led operation aimed at cracking down criminal gangs operating around the City Centre.

The operation was organized and conducted by officers from the Central Police Station and other Security agencies.

According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the gang disguise as mechanics targeting motorists around Kiseka market area. They also operate around Mini price, Gaza land, City Square and around Nakasero market where they fleece people of their valuables.

“Officers from Central Police Station have conducted an operation around Mini Price, Gaza land, City square and Kiseka to rid the city of criminal gangs targeting motorists around Kiseka,” Owoyesigyire said.

The operation infiltrated the criminal gang arresting a total of 100 suspects and are currently being detained at Central Police Station.

Security operatives also recovered suspected stolen items including phones, motor vehicle spare parts among others. Some suspects arrested were also found with suspected narcotic substances they sell to their agents around downtown.

According to a police report that was disseminated last year, city criminals operate in groups and have demarcated own territories of operation similar to what Nigerians call ‘area boys’.  The report indicated that there are an unwritten understandings among the criminal groups to respect each other’s territorial space except in circumstances of escaping from the law.

Owoyesigyire has however assured the public of police’s commitment to crackdown criminal gangs terrorizing innocent people around Kampala.
