The Territorial Police in Rwizi Region have apprehended two suspects involved in the alleged torture and attempted murder of a 16-year-old boy. The have suspects been, identified as Evans Kamuhanda (17) and Apollo Kamukama (43), both residents of Kaliba cell in Bubaare sub-county and are currently in police custody.
According to a statement released by SCP Fred Enanga on behalf of the police, the incident occurred on May 28, 2024. The suspects accused their victim, Charles Amanya, of stealing their mobile phones. They proceeded to tie him to a tree and subjected him to torture. Later that night, they buried him in a shallow grave, believing him to be dead.
However, Amanya managed to crawl out of the grave and took shelter in a nearby shack, where he remained for two days.
“The victim managed to crawl out of the shallow grave, to a nearby shack, where he spent two days till May 30, 2024, at around 6 pm, Where he was discovered by locals and taken to the police. He was transferred to Bubaare Health Centre for treatment,” Enanga stated.
In response to this horrifying incident, SCP Fred Enanga expressed his dismay at the actions of the suspects, who were supposed to be coworkers of the victim. Enanga emphasized that it was distressing to see someone held captive, tortured, and nearly killed over a missing phone.
Both Kamuhanda and Kamukama are now facing charges including torture, conspiracy, and attempted murder. SCP Enanga issued a stern warning to the public, emphasizing that torture is a punishable crime that can escalate into murder. He called upon citizens to respect the rule of law and avoid acts of impunity.
Efforts are currently underway to locate and apprehend the other suspects who are still at large. The police are determined to ensure that all individuals involved in this heinous crime face justice in a court of law.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of fostering a culture of respect for human rights and the principles of justice.
