Police in Mayuge Arrests Man Over Assault of Sister-in-law

The territorial Police in Mayuge District has arrested and detained a man over assaulting and torturing his sister-in-law for demanding for her baby that had been abducted by the suspect.

According to the Uganda Police Spokesperson SCP Fred Enanga, the suspect arrested on December 13, 2022, is identified as Muzahamu Mulidho, a 27-year-old boda-boda operator from Mpirabira village, Butakube Sub-County in Mayuge District.

Enanga said that Mulidho was apprehended after a video where he was recorded beating the victim went viral on various social media platforms which attracted attention and later led to his arrest.

Robinah Ndibogeza, aged 21 and a resident of the same village with the suspect is the mother of the three weeks old baby boy, and the victim in this case, according to Enanga.

Police indicate that the victim gave birth to a baby boy on August 13, 2022 and three weeks later, she had a misunderstanding with Mulidho (her brother-in-law) who on August 28, 2022 took the baby away from the victim on grounds that she was mad.

Police further revealed that Ndibogeza’s assault followed a quarrel between her and Mulidho on 29th August 2022 at Buwerere trading center as she was heading to her husband’s home to pick her baby and the immunization card. This later resulted in the suspect viciously slapping the victim.

According to additional information, the suspect further followed the victim and attacked her again. The victim together with her real husband have two children but live separately. The elder child stays with the mother, while the young one who is currently four months is in custody of the father.

Violence against women resulting from domestic violence and other causes has been on the rise in Uganda. Statistics show that 56% of women in Uganda experience physical violence while 27% experience sexual violence. Depriving a mother the custody of her three weeks old baby is unlawful according to the Ugandan law. Obtaining the custody of children from the mother is always given by the Courts of Law.
