The police have clarified how Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, the leader of the opposition National Unity Platform party (NUP), got injured during a scuffle with security on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2024.

In a brief statement issued by the police spokesperson, Kituuma Rusoke, Bobi Wine was not shot at but got injured when he stumbled while struggling to enter his car during the scuffle.

“During the ensuing altercation, it is alleged that he sustained injuries. Police officers on site claim he stumbled while getting into his vehicle, causing the injury, whereas Hon. Kyagulanyi and his team assert that he was shot,” said Kituuma.

The scuffle between Kyagulanyi and the police erupted when he and his team defied police directives against the illegal procession in Bulindo town.

“Bobi Wine and his team moved out of their cars and embarked on a procession up to Bulindo town; however, the police advised against it. Despite their guidance, he insisted on proceeding and closing the road, leading to police intervention to prevent the procession,” said the police.

According to police, she was invited by Mr. George Musisi (Lawyer) to a Thanksgiving ceremony in Bulindo, Kiira Municipality, Wakiso District.

Police have maintained that it is investigating the alleged shooting of Kyagulanyi to ascertain the motive.

In a post on his X-account, Kyagulanyi had previously claimed that he was shot and injured in the leg during the scuffle.

“This evening, as our President returned from Bulindo in Kira Municipality, where he had gone to check on one of our lawyers, Musisi George, the police and military under the command of one Twesigye surrounded our vehicles and started firing live bullets, teargas canisters, and other projectiles. In the process, our President #BobiWine, who was targeted, was shot in the leg,” Kyagulanyi posted on his x-account.
