The police flying squad unit has burst a gang of criminals who conduct thefts in areas of Bunamwaya, Kawempe–Kalerwe, Mukono, and Ndeeba.
According to ACP Rusoke Kituuma the new Uganda Police spokesperson during the security presser on Monday 8, July, 2024, the operation led to the arrest of 13 suspects.
“On 03 June 2024 our Flying Squad unit conducted operations against motor vehicle thefts in areas of Bunamwaya, Kawempe–Kalerwe, Mukono, and Ndeeba, “Rusoke said.
Among those arrested are Musinguzi Julius, Ssemyalo Rashid, Kasibante Stephen, Kibuuka Siraji, Kyazze Sammy, Bukenya Bashir, Mukasa Wamala, Kyazze Kennedy, Wandera John, Lubega Jerry, Nabuyondo Teddy, Bijumbuko Paul, and Anguzo Moses.
He noted that the operation also led to the recovery of 7 Motor Vehicles which include 2 Noah, Vitz, Probox, Spacio, and 2 Isuzu Forwards.
“Motor vehicle UAP 042N Noah was stolen from Kumi. A case of aggravated robbery was investigated by Kumi Police. Amoit George and Taika Godfrey were arrested and remanded at Kumi prisons. A nother Motor vehicle UAX 827P Isuzu was stolen from Kakumiro District,” he noted.
The police spokesperson also disclosed that the flying squad team managed to disorganize criminal activities by some of the gangs that operate in the Central and Western regions of Uganda leading to the arrest of one of the commanders of the gangs.
Additionally, the operation disrupted the activities of a group suspected of stealing lorries for sale in Kampala and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Those implicated in these activities, including Kyazze Kennedy, Lubega Jerry, Nabuyondo Teddy, Bijumbuko Paul, Anguzo Moses, and Ssekyanda Drake, are currently in custody to aid ongoing investigations.
Rusoke advised vehicle owners to enhance security measures such as installing car trackers to deter thefts and facilitate recovery in case of incidents.
This successful operation adds to a series of police actions targeting criminal elements across Uganda. Notably, on February 6, 2024, police apprehended individuals linked to a gang involved in vehicle thefts in Mbarara City. The gang, infamous for robbing vehicles like the one belonging to Bineruhanga Allan with registration number UAS 635B parked at Shooters Bar, faced swift justice thanks to police intervention.
