Police Arrests 3 UMEME Staff, 59 Others over Vandalism of Electricity Infrastructure

The joint Security agencies in an ongoing operation have so far arrested 62 suspects in connection with vandalism of Electricity infrastructure. The suspects were arrested in the districts of Mityana, Wakiso, Gomba, Masaka and Kampala Metropolitan areas.

According to the Uganda Police spokesperson SCP Fred Enanga, among the arrested are three UMEME employees. They include, Ndugga John, Kibalizi George and Ssendi Charles all workers of UMEME attached to Masaka branch.

The three suspects were intercepted selling electricity poles in Kabulasoke Sub-county Gomba district. They were also found with a UMEME truck loaded with an assortment of electric wires.

The police spokesperson has appealed to the general public to report all cases of vandalism on utility infrastructures to nearby Police stations and other responsible offices.

“To help fight the menace of vandalism of utility infrastructure, we are reminding the public about the reward for information that may lead to the arrest and prosecution of vandals of utility infrastructure,” Enanga said.

Police has also reassured its commitment to crack down the acts of theft and vandalism of utility infrastructure across the Country.

“As the Joint Security Agencies, our primary concern in preventing theft of utility infrastructure is to maintain the safety of utility infrastructure and pursue all perpetrators causing significant damage to the infrastructure,” Enanga said.
