Police in Kampala have arrested three individuals for alleged computer misuse and spreading hate speech against President Yoweri Museveni, his son, and other political and media figures.
While addressing the media at the police headquarters in Naguru on November 11, 2024, Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the arrests of the suspects and identified them as Julius Tayebwa, David Sengooni, and Isaiah Ssekaji.
“Police will arraign three individuals in court for alleged computer misuse and spreading hate speech on different personalities including the President of Uganda and First Son, “Owoyesigyire said.
He said that the suspects have been seen in very different videos on specifically TikTok, spreading hate, and abuse of all sorts on different personalities.
These arrests come in the wake of Uganda’s recent amendments to the Computer Misuse Act, which impose strict penalties for online offenses, including up to five years in prison for those found guilty of violating privacy or tarnishing reputations online.
The crackdown on alleged online misconduct reflects broader concerns about freedom of expression in Uganda, particularly as activists and critics of the government face increasing scrutiny and legal challenges for their social media activities.
