People’s Government and people power both lack a common ideology

Betty Nambooze has come out to defend the operations of her People’s Government outfit and its role in the democratic governance of Uganda. The Member of Parliament for Mukono municipality came out to argue that her outfit was bone out of necessity and does not contradict the ideas of the rival people power of Robert Kyagulanyi.

However what she didn’t allude to is the lack of a memorandum of understanding between the two outfits whose very existence has been challenged before the courts of law by a private citizen.

Indeed, the two outfits are not registered political parties and thus cannot continue to legally operate as such. The two entities have also failed to agree on a common modus operandi and hence continue to mislead their followers while weakening legitimate and recognized political parties from which most of their members emanate.

What they currently have is a group of individuals who have failed to accommodate dissenting voices in their parent parties. For example the FDC had a very big crack that led to the expulsion of its former President, Mugisha Muntu. Betty Nambooze too failed to accommodate party chairman Norbert Mao in the DP and she decided to join the illegal People’s government.

On his part, Robert Kyagulanyi has failed to unite with many other political organizations and although he claims to stand for anything that will oust President Yoweri Museveni from power, he has not demonstrated the level of political nouse that is required to create a single formidable force able to run a sustained national political campaign.

Also, whereas the people power camp has continued to preach a campaign of active participation in elections through voter awareness, the people’s government has advocated for violence and defiance against the regime and resistance of all efforts for peaceful governance.

Its is very difficult to see their point of union and it is clear that both parties see an opportunity in weakening established political parties and processes in the country as a means of fronting their agendas.
