Political parties have expressed confidence in their victory in the Dokolo District Woman Parliamentary by-election, as voting is underway at the 173 polling stations.
According to Uganda People’s Congress Party (UPC) President Jimmy Akena, their confidence was drawn from the unity and brotherhood spirit displayed during the campaign for their candidate, Sarah Aguti Nyangkori.
Jimmy Akena, during the final day of campaigns on March 19, 2024, also declared the UPC candidate the best in the region.
“I have a few things to say. You know, when politics gets heated up, people say a lot of things, but I, Akena, am not going to talk about people. I came here to support my candidate when we were struggling with multipartism. It was through struggle that we could build and support our candidates in multi-partism. I have brought a candidate whom I know can serve the people of Dokolo effectively,” Akena said.
Members of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) have also pitched camp in Dokolo to ensure they protect their candidate, Dr. Rosemary Alwoc Ogwal, who is seeking to replace her late mother, Cecilia Ogwal.
According to Ogwal, her victory is already registered, as she is confident to win and replace her mother.
In the same vein, President Museveni, also the National Resistance Movement (NRM) national chairman, visited the district on Tuesday to boast support for party flag bearer Jane Janet Adongo, expressing confidence for a win.
Other candidates include the National Unity Platform’s Harriet Ageno and independent candidates Dr. Esther AKullo Obot and Rebecca Arao.
The over 95,000 voters are choosing between the six candidates hoping that the woman elected will continue the work initiated by the late Hon. Cecilia Atim Ogwal, who is said to have had impactful contributions that transcended international boundaries.
The voters expect the elected candidate to represent their interests effectively and address local needs like healthcare and education.
