Over 50 supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) have officially joined the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), led by Gen. Muhoozi, the Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
The announcement was made on Thursday, January 9, 2024, during an event at the PLU headquarters in Naguru, where Michael Mawanda, the Director of Mobilization for the Patriotic League of Uganda, welcomed the new members.
“Some of your former colleagues in NUP who saw the light, like Jimmy Lwanga, are now in Parliament as our coordinator, though on an NUP ticket. I, therefore, thank you and welcome you to the Patriotic League of Uganda.” He stated
The new members who joined are believed to include some of the 19 NUP members who were recently pardoned by President Museveni. These had been convicted by the Military Court Martial after pleading guilty to charges of treachery and illegal possession of firearms.
Mawanda emphasized discipline among the new recruits, remarking, “We are a disciplined force. If you behave well, you will have many friends, but if you behave poorly, you lose many friends.”
This shift marks a significant development in Uganda’s political landscape, reflecting ongoing realignments and engagement among key political entities as we head towards the 2026 General elections.
