A section of opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) subscribing to the National Unity Platform (NUP) party have vowed to boycott the Presidential address on issues of National importance to Parliament in protest of President Museveni’s strong stand against homosexuality and LGBTQ activities in the country.
The President is set to address Parliament today Thursday 16th March 2023, on issues of National importance at Kololo Independence grounds starting at 2pm.
NUP MPs led by the Kyadondo East constituency Member of Parliament Hon. Muwada Nkunyingi who also doubles as the Shadow Cabinet Minister in charge of Foreign affairs have accused majority of their colleagues in Parliament and the President in general of being discriminative of sexual minorities in the country.
They claim human rights and freedoms of homosexuals should be addressed first and respected because they are also issues of National importance.
“Museveni should drop his homophobic tendency and understand that homosexuals are also human beings. We represent different categories of people and therefore everyone’s voice should be heard without prejudice and discrimination,” Hon. Nkunyingi stated.
Nkunyingi claims that homosexuals just like other citizens deserve equal protection of the law in order to achieve their aspirations.
For the past few months, President Museveni vowed and expressed his commitment to protect African culture against LGBTQ activities that are being championed by the Western world and their agents.
Parliament has since tabled a private member bill titled “Anti-homosexuality Bill 2023” which seeks to criminalize the promotion of LGBTQ activities especially among the youths and communities at large. The Bill that was tabled by Hon. Asuman Basalirwa is now before the Parliamentary Legal committee for scrutiny before it can be taken back to Parliament for the Second reading.
