NRM’s Herbert Edmund Ariko elected Soroti East Member of Parliament

Herbert Edmund Ariko has been elected as the Soroti East Member of Parliament after being declared a winner in the concluded Soroti East by-election that took place yesterday, the 28th July 2022.

Ariko contested on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party ticket and gathered 9,407 votes against his closest contender Attan Okia (FDC) who got 8,771 votes, while the Uganda Peoples’ Congress-UPC candidate, Pascal Amuriat got 115 votes.

Ariko defeated FDC’s Attan who has been his closest rival and declared winner at around 10:00 pm by Christine Eyu, the Soroti City Electoral Returning Officer.

According to Christine Eyu, out of 18,400 votes cast for the candidates, the valid votes were 18,293 while 107 were invalid.

“The total number of votes cast for the candidates were 18,400. The valid votes were 18,293 with 107 spoilt ballot papers,” she said.

Voting was carried out in all the 63 polling stations in Soroti East Constituency.

The by-election was carried out after Court of Appeal ruled in favor of Ariko there by nullifying Attan’s victory on grounds that it was illegal for the Electoral Commission to annex the parishes of Aloet and Opiyai to Soroti City West Constituency yet they were previously under Soroti City East Constituency.
