A total of 15.8 million national identity cards are expected to expire by August 2025 according to the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA).
This was announced by the Executive Director of the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), Rose Kisembo, on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, during a workshop for the media about the forthcoming mass enrolment exercise.
She noted that the number is part of those targeted for the upcoming exercise set to kick off around the country.
According to her, the new national IDs will have upgraded features, including the iris, a detectable security element under ultraviolet (UV) light that would make forgery and duplication of the ID difficult, among others.
Kisembo also highlighted that only 27.4 million out of the 45.9 million Ugandans are currently registered.
She explained that the forthcoming exercise will target between 17 and 18 million Ugandans who have never been registered, and it will also cater for the 1.5 million Ugandans who are born every year, according to statistics by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics.
