The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has ramped up preparations for the mass renewal of national IDs scheduled to begin in march 2025.
On January 7, NIRA received its second batch of 1,700 national ID registration kits, complementing the 1,000 kits delivered earlier in the week. This brings the total to 2,700 kits, marking a significant milestone in gearing up for the nationwide exercise.
The mass registration program, set to launch in March 2025, aims to renew and update national identification cards, a vital component of Uganda’s governance and security infrastructure.
With millions of Ugandans expected to participate, the program will play a pivotal role in streamlining citizen identification, enhancing service delivery, and strengthening national security.
To ensure the success and security of the program, Uganda Police Force has pledged its support to NIRA’s efforts.
During a courtesy call, the Inspector General of Police Abas Byakagaba met with Rosemary Kisembo, the Executive Director of NIRA on January 9, 2025 to discuss collaborative strategies.
The two leaders focused on enhancing security for NIRA’s operations and identifying ways the police can provide logistical and operational support during the mass registration process.
Byakagaba emphasized the importance of vital security measures to protect the integrity of the national ID system and prevent any potential disruptions during the exercise.
“We are committed to supporting NIRA’s operations to ensure a secure and efficient registration process that contributes to national security and public trust,” he stated.
The Ugandan government is enhancing the use of the national ID program to enhance security, improve public service delivery, and enhance individual tracking.
NIRA’s Executive Director, Ms. Kisembo, expressed gratitude for the police’s involvement, highlighting the critical role security forces will play in ensuring the program’s success.
She also noted that the 2,700 kits will enable a smooth rollout of the registration process, particularly in remote areas where access to registration services has historically been limited.
Uganda’s mass national ID renewal program, utilizing advanced technology, improved outreach, and security, is a significant step forward in creating a more inclusive and reliable identification system.
As the March 2025 launch date approaches, citizens are encouraged to prepare for the exercise, ensuring that they have the necessary documentation to renew their IDs and contribute to building a safer, more organized Uganda.
