Farmers within different divisions of Kampala have this week been given 176,920 chicks from the National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS).
The farmers are within the three divisions of Nakawa, Kawempe and Makindye and the distribution exercise started on Monday within Kawempe Division where about 501 farmers shared 62,000 chicks and 85,375kg of feeds.
The farmers are also set to receive about 197,500 kilograms of chicken feeds to help them start off their one-day old chicks.
In addition to chicks and chicken feeds, each farmer will get poultry inputs such as drinkers, warmers among others worth shs1 million.
The Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Ms. Amina Lukanga, who handed over the chicks and feeds challenged the people of Kawempe not to politicize government programmes but support them for their own benefit and urged the beneficiaries to fully utilize the shared items to transform their lives.
“Government wants the people of Kampala to be transformed and get out of poverty. This support is aimed at improving the incomes of the households and increasing food security. Let us not politicize these programs, let us use them to get ourselves out of poverty,” Ms. Lukanga said.
According to the KCCA acting director of Gender, Community Services and Production, Mr. John Bosco Bashinyora there will be KCCA extension workers to support farmers.
“We want to see this program succeeding, if you need technical support reach out to our extension staff to help you,” Bashinyora said.
About 421 farmers within Makindye will share 61,900 chicks and 72,425 kg of feeds. A total of 304 farmers within Nakawa are to share 53,020 chicks and 39,700 kg of feeds.
