MV Umoja Completes Maiden Voyage from Mwanza Port to Port Bell after Rehabilitation

The MV Umoja, a cargo vessel plying the Mwanza-Port Bell route, has successfully completed its maiden voyage after undergoing rehabilitation.

The Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) has stated that the ship, which has successfully completed its maiden voyage, is an enhancement to water transport on Lake Victoria, more so to the central corridor route.

According to URC Port Manager David Musiime, their biggest challenge was consistency in providing what the clients needed and their incapacity to serve.

“We have been having one ship here, MV Kawa, which has been insufficient. The coming of MV Umoja is an enhancement of our operations, and we welcome it,” Musiime said.

The MV Umoja was docked in Mwanza in 2019 for rehabilitation. It was operating alongside MV Kawa, both carrying a maximum of 1200 metric tonnes of cargo per trip and able to transport 22 waggons.

According to the ship’s technical staff, MV Umoja is in perfect condition and ready to start trips.

Captain Bembele N’gwita, the ship’s captain, said that they installed new equipment and machinery, and it had been operating smoothly and efficiently.

The MV Umoja rehabilitation works cost the Tanzanian government a whopping US$8.4 billion, which signifies the Tanzanian government’s commitment to facilitate regional trade.
