President Yoweri Museveni, the chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), has called upon NRM leaders to participate in the verification exercise and update of the National Voters Register ahead of the 2026 general elections, and ensure party supporters are verified.
In a letter dated Tuesday, January 7, 2025, addressed to members of the Central Executive Committee (CEC), National Executive Committee (NEC), Members of Parliament, and NRM leaders at all levels, President Museveni emphasized the need to maintain accurate voter records.
Following the National Electoral Commission’s (NEC) announcement of the electoral roadmap, beginning with the vital task of verifying and updating the voters’ registers, the President called on all NRM leaders to engage party supporters to actively participate in the verification process.
“This process will take place from January 20 to February 10, 2025. During this period, the names of registered voters will be displayed at polling stations across Uganda, allowing individuals to check if their names are correctly listed,” President Museveni stated.
He emphasized the importance of verifying not only their own names but also those of their acquaintances on the register. Additionally, he highlighted the need to remove the names of deceased individuals and ensure that young citizens who have recently turned 18 are properly registered to vote.
“This is a vital exercise for our democracy. I appeal to all of you to check and ensure that your names are on the registers and assist in updating them by removing the deceased and adding new voters,” President Museveni added.
The president’s call to action serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to uphold democratic processes. By verifying and updating the voters’ register, NRM leaders were challenged to ensure that every eligible NRM supporter has a voice in the upcoming elections.
Initially set to run from Friday, January 3, to Friday, January 24, 2025, the exercise was postponed to begin on Monday, January 20, and conclude on February 10, 2025, where voter lists will be made available for public scrutiny at every polling station all over Uganda.
The update will occur daily, including weekends, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at designated stations across the country.
