Museveni Honors Pledge to Reduce Driving License for Boda Boda

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has honored his pledge to lower the high license fee for Boda Boda users. The President made this pledge during the passing out of 372 Boda Boda leaders who had undergone patriotism training at the Oliver Reginald Tambo School of Leadership and Pan-African Centre of Excellence-Kaweweta in Nakaseke district.

The Ministry of Works and Transport, in partnership with the Uganda Security Printing Company (USPC), on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, announced a reduction in the cost of driving licenses for riders and vehicle operators, effective August 1, 2024.

In a statement released on July 31, 2024, the learner’s permit was reduced to UGX 40,000 while the new license has been reduced to UGX 100,000 for a year, UGX 130,000 for three years, and UGX 250,000 for five years.

The cost of renewal has been reduced to UGX 70,000 for a single year, UGX 100,000 for three years, and UGX 200,000 for five years, while the cost of the duplicate was reduced to UGX 60,000, and the extension would be UGX 60,000.

Leaner licenses used to cost UGX 60,000; the new licenses cost UGX 135,000 for a year, 230,000 for three years, and 330,000 for five. The renewal was UGX 135,000 for one year, UGX 210,000 for three years, and UGX 310,000 for five years. UGX 121,000 was the duplicate, and UGX 121,000 was the cost of the extension.

During the passout, the President also assured the boda boda leaders that all the motorcycles that were impounded by police during operations were going to be set free.

On July 15, 2024, police invited all owners of impounded boda-boda to pick up their motorcycles from the different police stations countrywide.
