Members of parliament Hon. Michael Mawanda, Paul Akamba and City lawyer Julius Taitankoko Kirya, have each been granted bail of UGX 35 M in cash by the High Court on corruption charges.

Justice Jane Okuo Kajuga while presiding over the court session on August 30, 2024, ordered the MPs to deposit their passports with the court, be barred from leaving the country without permission, and have their sureties bonded in the amount of UGX 50 M not in cash.

Justice Kajuga noted that the investigations are complete and there is no fear that they will interfere with the investigations.

The two legislators, along with MP Ignatius Mudimi Wamakuyu (Elgon County), lawyer Julius Taitankoko Kirya, and Leonard Kavundira, a Principal Cooperative Officer from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, were accused of diverting UGX 3.4 Bn meant for war loss compensation to the Buyaka Growers Cooperative Society for their personal benefit.

The group has been on remand since June 21, 2024, where they face charges of diversion of public resources and conspiracy to defraud. MP Wamakuyu was recently granted bail by the Anti-Corruption Court, with the condition that he deposit his passport.
