The Ministry of Education and Sports has issued a statement clarifying its position regarding the use of mobile digital devices in schools, specifically prohibiting the use of mobile phones and tablets on school premises.

In a statement released September 9, 2024, Dr. Dennis K. Mugimba, the Ministry’s spokesperson, emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing the use of electronic tools for effective learning and management within educational institutions.

“Policy standards and guidelines governing the use of digital tools in schools are still being developed,” Dr. Mugimba stated, stating the ongoing efforts to establish a framework for technology integration in education.

The Ministry reiterated the current prohibition on handheld mobile devices, noting that students should utilize school computers in laboratories instead. This approach aims to alleviate financial burdens on parents who may struggle to provide personal devices for their children.

Furthermore, the statement stresses the importance of digital information security and online safety for learners, categorizing these as top priorities.

“Educational institutions are urged to ensure that internet access does not expose students to inappropriate content, in accordance with Ugandan laws,” the statement reads.

Dr. Mugimba encouraged schools to adhere to these guidelines as they work towards responsibly integrating technology into the learning environment.

“As Uganda navigates the digital landscape in education, the Ministry remains focused on creating a safe and effective learning atmosphere for all students,” he noted.

This announcement follows the recent launch of the Digital Agenda Strategy on August 22, 2024, aimed at enhancing educational practices through technology laws.
