Minister Peter Ogwang Elected Chairperson of African Union Sports Council

The Minister of State for Sports, also a member of parliament for Ngariam County Katakwi district, the honorable Peter Ogwang, has been elected as the chairperson of the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) at the first ordinary session of the African Union Sports Council of Ministers in Arusha, Tanzania.

“By God’s grace, I was this morning elected as the Chairperson of African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region IV at the first Ordinary Session of the AUSC Council of Ministers in Arusha, Tanzania,” Minister Ogwanga said.

The minister added that the only solution to developing African sports is for African states to come together in order to pool resources and share ideas on how to elevate the sports sectors in member countries.

 

“Together, we can progress sports in Africa,” he tweeted.

According to the African Union Sports Council, the meeting, which lasted from May 2nd–4th, 2023, was attended by port directors and honorable ministers from all AUSC Region IV Member States in Arusha, Tanzania.

The AUSC region IV member states include Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, South Sudan, Rwanda, Mauritius, Ethiopia, Comoro, Madagascar, Eritrea, Somalia, Djibouti, and Seychelles.

The African Union Sport Council is a specialized technical office of the African Union whose responsibility is to coordinate the Africa Sports Movement and provide a forum for concerted action between Member States for the promotion and development of sports.

And the council is also mandated to facilitate sports development on the African continent in terms of skill development, social interaction, and communication of relevant information on programs in combating HIV and AIDS and anti-doping programs, as well as to promote person-to-person development programs.

Others include increasing the revenue of the African Games and instituting transparent mechanisms regarding the proceeds raised from marketing and sponsorship, funding, and training of sportsmen and women, among others.
