The Minister of ICT and National governance, Honorable Frank Tumwebaze has said that he we misquoted by the daily monitor after he was reported to have said that government was Misguided by officials from the Ministry of Finance on the Over the Top Tax introduced this financial year.

In a tweet on his official twitter account, the minister said, “”Hoodwinked” was the @DailyMonitor reporter’s word not mine. I told the #ICTCommittee of @Parliament_Ug that much as taxation isn’t the mandate of @MoICT_Ug , we shall undertake to asses the impact of all taxes in the sector and share our views with @mofpedU”.

The communication comes days after a daily monitor story with an interview of the minister reported that the government may have been misled and had gone viral on social media with many commentators blaming government for not carrying out adequate research before implementing new policies.

The new OTT tax has been collected successfully by URA and figures from past quarters have indicated only minor collection deficits mostly attributed to tax evasion by people using VPNs.
