The Minister of East African Community Affairs, Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga has asked Parliament to adopt Kiswahili as an official language in Uganda.
Minister Kadaga who also doubles as the first Deputy Prime Minister says Parliament should expedite the implementation of the 21st East Africa Community (EAC) summit directive to adopt Kiswahili as an official language of the community.
The 21st summit of the EAC Heads of State held on 27th February 2021, adopted Kiswahili as an official language of the Community.
According to the Minister, the declaration by the Community Head of States warrants the implementation of the directive in Uganda.
“This, therefore, warrants the implementation of the directive in Uganda to adopt Kiswahili as an official language,” Kadaga said.
Kadaga said that the Ministry of East African Affairs is engaging the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development to establish the National Kiswahili Council which will champion the Kiswahili Development initiative at the national level.
