Military Court Sentences Man To Four Years Imprisonment

The Army Court Martial has sentenced a 24-year-old man identified as Musinguzi Denis to  four years imprisonment for unlawful possession of defense stores contrary to Section 160 (1) and (2) of the UPDF Act 2005.

On January 16, 2023, the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) General Court Martial, chaired by Brig. Gen. Freeman Mugabe and sitting at Makindye in Kampala, sentenced Musinguzi to three (3) years, eleven (11) months, and fourteen (14) days in Kitalya government prison.

The sentence stemmed from his November 14, 2022, appearance before the same court where he (Musinguzi) pleaded guilty to all the charges against him.

“The maximum sentence is life imprisonment. Therefore, after deducting a period of five (5) months and sixteen (16) days spent on remand and a period of seven (7) months for mitigating factors, the court has sentenced the convict to three (3) years, eleven (11) months, and fourteen (14) days in Kitalya government prison,” part of the judgment reads.

The court had also established that the convict is not a first-time offender following his previous conviction over the same offense in July 2021, where he was convicted and sentenced to caution.

In October 2021, the convict was further arrested and charged with unlawful possession of government stores, and a court sentenced him to seven (7) months at Kigo government prison.
