Man Remanded to Kanungu Prison over Homosexuality

On March 30th, 2023, Kanungu Grade One Magistrate remanded a 22-year old man to Kanungu Prison over engaging in homosexuality.

The accused is identified as Davis Orikuriza, a resident of Katungu Cell, Eastern Ward, Kambuga Town Council in Kanungu District.

Asanasip Mukobi, the Grade One Magistrate remanded Orikiriza to Kanungu Prison on charges of engaging in homosexuality, contrary to section 145 of the penal code act.

According to Peter Muhindo, the leaProsecutorthe accused is a businessman and resident of Katungu Cell, Eastern Ward, Kambuga Town council in Kanungu District.

Court heard that on March 22 at Katojo Trading Centre in Kanungu District, Orikiriza allegedly had carnal knowledge of a one Emmanuel Matsiko against the order of nature by having sexual intercourse with him, he said.

According to court, the accused person was not allowed to take plea due to what court described as the weight of the offence he committed.

However, the case was adjourned and Orikiriza was scheduled to reappear before the Kanungu Chief Magistrate on April 6, 2023.

The Ugandan parliament approved stringent penalties for persons involved in promoting homosexuality. The law sets a death penalty for the offence of aggravated homosexuality, where a victim is a child below 14 or a person above 75 years, a person with a disability or who suffers a disability as a result of the sexual act, or those with mental illness.
