Makerere Alumni Pins Yusuf Sserunkuma in an Open Letter

Dear Yusuf Sserunkuma,

During your discussion on NBS TV, on the show NBS Morning Breeze, you called upon the people to get up and fight the ruling regime violently. With all honesty, how do you advise people to engage in such cruel acts?

You lied that you were ready to march to parliament, something that the host,Simon Kaggwa Njala, laughed at, insinuating that he, at his age, could not do this. Why not match to your Member of Parliament?

I write to you with extreme disappointment because you want to mislead our Gen Zs. I remember during our university days (2004–2007) when we rose against the injustice committed to the guild presidential candidate, Jet John Tumwebaze you hid in your room. So have you now manned up enough, or are you a barking dog that does not bite?

As a Professor, you should stop addressing the President of the nation as Mr. Museveni and then a musician as H.E. Kyagulanyi. Have some respect and practice non-partisan politics. Are you still in touch with Hon. Kibalya, whom you seriously campaigned for at Makerere University under the DP party, and now he is NRM-leaning? What is your focus in life?

When Simon Kaggwa Njala asked you about your thoughts on NUP’s moments of reckoning coming early, this is what you said: “I just think that they didn’t think through what it meant to form a political party. Because the political party keeps you engaged in stupid things like the land title of your offices, the origin of the party, and the stupid laws passed by parliament, you spend your entire adult political career dealing with nonsense, wasting time entangled in solving chicken wrangles of the land title of your offices.

This member is indisciplined, you have to dismiss so and so, and you are engaged in things that are way below the actions of this country.” So are you against the political party regime?
Whoever wants to be meaningful to this country, get out of the political party.

You also said that if Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba and those around him ever dream of being presidents of this country in the present time, they have to overthrow Museveni forcefully because Museveni does not trust anybody to be in charge of this country.

I laughed at how funny you sounded. You contradicted yourself by saying that Gen. Kainerugaba has a chance of overthrowing the President because of the coups you have seen in West Africa. How do you say that Gen. Kainerugaba can agree with the President to give him the window to overthrow him forcefully?

You said that you are so tired of President Museveni that even if his son overthrew him, people in the City for example would be on the streets chanting Muhoozi’s name and celebrate his bravery in overthrowing his dad.
As Ugandans, we would love to see you on the front lines. Kindly walk the talk. Why don’t you practice what you preach?

I end by advising you to be the change that you want in our beloved country. Probably, you could contest and lead by example.

Yours sincerely,
Sophie Lalonyo
