Lt Gen Proscovia Nalweyiso, the President’s advisor on Security and Defense, has strongly condemned the actions of the National Unity Platform (NUP), President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, following a confrontation with police where he got injured on his leg from a teargas canister in Kira-Bulindo on September 2, 2024.
Gen Nalweyiso made these remarks while appearing on a local television on Thursday, September 19, 2024, to discuss issues arising in Uganda. She emphasized that political leaders must take responsibility for the safety of their supporters, urging Kyagulanyi and others to educate themselves on better protective measures to prevent such incidents.
“Kyagulanyi, who is currently in the United States, has expressed his intent to return and carry out countrywide tours; however, I caution him to ensure the safety of his supporters and educate them on better protective measures by following the law to avoid chaos upon his return,” she said.
Addressing the detention and trial of NUP supporters in military courts, Gen Nalweyiso defended the legal processes, stating that those involved were found with weapons, including firearms and ammunition.
“A person cannot be taken to a military court for a minor offense such as burning a tyre on the street,” she noted.
Lt Gen Nalweyiso clarified that none of Kyagulanyi’s supporters have been arrested solely for their political affiliation; rather, arrests were made due to violent actions, including stone-throwing and attacks on vehicles.
“No one has been arrested for supporting Kyagulanyi as it is alleged by NUP, as all were arrested due to the violence they inflicted on people, including throwing stones and attacking people’s vehicles without any regard for the law,” she said.
She stated, “If this were the case, all three million voters who supported Kyagulanyi would have been in jail,” underscoring that even members of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) faced consequences for similar violence.
Gen Nalweyiso further implored negligent leaders to reconsider their political ambitions if they haven’t actively contributed to their communities. She cautioned those who have lost their relevance against seeking re-election or making demands.
In a related issue, Gen Nalweyiso condemned the attack on Kyagulanyi, calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding these incidents.
Lt Gen Nalweyiso’s statements reflect a call for accountability among leaders and a commitment to maintaining order amidst the challenges Uganda’s political landscape faces.
