The local residents of Katonya village in Nyakishenyi sub county in Rukungiri district together with their counterparts in Rutenga district in Kanungu district have pooled funds together and constructed a 15 km road that connects the two districts .

Nyakishenyi sub county District Councilor Twinomujuni Wednesday who coordinated the fundraising said that the road was vital and needed to connect the areas to other parts of the districts.

Twinomujuni told journalists that for many years the residents had asked the Local governments both in Rukungiri and Kanungu to help open and construct the road but nothing was done and when they got tired of waiting and begging they decided to pull resources together and ensure that the road is worked on.

The Road which starts from Katonya in Nyakishenyi goes through Omundeeba Trading Center in Nyakishenyi sub county, Rukungiri district and connects to Kigarama in Rutenga sub county , Kanungu district and ends again in Kirimbe Nyakishenyi.

Twinomujuni said that the road will help residents transport timber, Irish potatoes, cabbages , matooke which are grown in the area to bigger markets.

During the function Dec 8th 2018, Bob Alex Rugonde who earlier helped moblise fuel for tractor to start opening up the road, contributed over sh 2m by buying items which the locals had brought for sale to raise funds.

Rugonde who works with Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) said that he was optimistic that with the new road the coffee farmers would get better prices for their produce.

He thanked the people of Katonya for being united for a good cause to develop their area and promised that he will always support them when they come up with such development initiatives.

The Thanksgiving service was led by Nyakishenyi Catholic Parish Priest Rev Fr Ambrose Kibuuka assisted by other religious from other denominations from the sub county and he hailed the spirit of unity exhibited by Christians and other religions in Nyakishenyi when it comes to work on development projects.

He particularly hailed Councilor Wednesday Twinomujuni for serving the people of Nyakishenyi sub county without discrimination.

Funds raised from the Thanksgiving are managed by a committee elected from the residents and coordinated by Councilor Wednesday Twinomujuni.
