The bishop of Lira Diocese, Rt. Rev. Sanctus Lino Wanok has attributed the escalating cases of murders in Lango sub region to increased drug abuse and excessive consumption of alcohol.
Bishop Wanok says the killings which are becoming rampant are social and are as a result of people taking too much illicit drug substances like marijuana.
According to North Kyoga Regional Police reports, more than 12 people have been murdered in the last two weeks in this Sub-region.
There are nine districts that makeup Lango Sub-region, and these are Lira, Oyam, Kole, Otuke, Kwania, Amolatar, Alebtong, Apac, and Dokolo.
The bishop said that such substances are supposed to be used only on medical grounds.
The man of God has therefore asked the Government to set up stringent rules on the use of drug substances noting that people take the marijuana freely on the streets while some grow and sell it freely which results into increased murder cases.
The North Kyoga regional police spokesperson, ASP Jimmy Patrick Okema also says that there is need for increased sensitization and community policing to deal with other cases like domestic violence in homes.
Okema added that police is doing all their best to see that the law takes its course against the perpetrators.
He also urged the community to work hand in hand with police in order to curb crime in the society.
