LC Chairpersons to Stay in Office Despite Term Expiry – President Museveni

Nabbanja

Yoweri Museveni has tasked a high-level political committee led by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja with developing rules to operationalize the 81,220 Local Council chairpersons’ stay in office, though terms expired yesterday, July 10, 2023.

According to Nabbanja and local government minister Raphael Magyezi, the incumbent office-bearers will continue to execute their duties under a special arrangement due to a lack of funds to hold fresh elections.

Speaking to Members of Parliament, Nabbanja stated that the team is currently preparing the guidelines and will report back as soon as possible to avoid creating a vacuum, adding that the Attorney General will issue a statutory instrument to allow them to continue in office.

“We had a high-level political meeting, and the President asked us to come up with the guidelines to operationalize their stay in office. We have no choice because we don’t have a budget to conduct the elections now,” Nabbanja said.
