KRA Seizes Counterfeit Alcoholic Drinks in High-Level Tax Evasion Scheme

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has impounded over 2500 bottles of counterfeit spirits destined for the local market because their safety could not be ascertained.

Following intelligence, the team’s ongoing operation saw KRA detectives from the Economic and Commercial Crimes Unit intercept a shipment of fake alcoholic beverages.

“The counterfeit drinks whose safety to consumers could not be immediately ascertained were packaged in branded bottles that are popular among local joints: smart vodka, Supa Vodka, Blue Ice, and People vodka, among others,” said the KRA detectives.

KRA noted that they recovered 24,000 pieces of counterfeit KRA stamps and 40 litres of ethanol.

“The recovery was made at a house within the Kenyatta Road area, Chai Estate,” added the KRA detectives.

According to KRA, a confiscation notice was issued, and goods were impounded as investigations are underway to establish the source of ethanol and fake KRA stamps.
