Kenya Suspends Stoppage on Importation of Milk Products

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, Kenya, has suspended the stoppage on the importation of milk products following a letter from the Kenya Dairy Board on March 6th 2023 banning the importation of milk powder outside Kenya.

The ban was suspended in a letter addressed to all dairy produce importers by the Principal Secretary Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock development, Mr. Harry Kimtai, yesterday Monday 14th March 2023.

“The stoppage issued through Kenya Dairy Board letter ref. KDB/MD/SED/1 VOL.5/58 dated 6thMarch 2023, is hereby suspended to allow for the Dairy Industry (import and export) regulations 2021 to apply accordingly,” part of the letter reads.

According to Kimtai, the ban from the KDB meant for the products imported outside the East African Community (EAC) bloc and does not affect goods imported within the member states.

“Take note that, importation of products under the East African Community (EAC) protocols refers to goods being imported from outside the EAC member states, while goods traded within EAC are referred to as transfers,” Kimtai stated.

Hon. Rebecca Kadaga the Minister for East African Community affairs and third deputy Prime Minister has confirmed the development saying bilateral discussions between the two countries are underway.

“I’m delighted to inform the dairy industry in Uganda that the ban on milk products has been suspended. I have also had fruitful discussions with the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of East African Community Kenya on bilateral issues,” Kadaga stated.
