The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has oriented a strong surveillance team and trained about 200 Village Health Teams (VHTs) in every division of the city to sensitize the communities about Mpox disease.

Richard Walyomu, the Incident Commander of Mpox at Kampala Capital City Authority, said on October 31, 2024, that KCCA has instituted Mpox coordination task forces headed by the Resident City Commissioners (RCC) of respective divisions, including religious leaders and technical people, to manage the surge in numbers.

The authorities confirmed 96 cases of Mpox in Kampala district, with 56 cases coming from the Kawempe division, 13 cases from Lubaga, 11 cases from the central, nine cases from Makindye, and eight cases from Nakawa.

According to Walyomu, among the most affected persons are commercial sex workers, timber dealers, boda boda riders, and market vendors.

“Most of the affected sex workers have been found to be HIV positive because of their low immunity; however, there are also a few cases registered from people working in betting companies, teachers, saloons, and children who contract the disease from their parents,” Walyomu said.

Currently, in the metropolitan area, there are 33 cases confirmed in Wakiso district and six cases in Mukono.
