Kampala Street Vendors, Hawkers Call Off Demonstration

The Kampala city street vendors and hawkers have called off their planned demonstration which was slated for today Tuesday 22, 02. 2022 after adhering to security caution and advice.

The group under their umbrella the New Generation which that was being mobilized by some opposition politicians in Kampala had planned to carry out a demonstration in the city today.

The umbrella body hoped to force the government to let hawkers back to the streets through disrupting normal business operations in Kampala and forcing everyone to close their shops and go home.

However, security had been tipped on the matter and said it was ready to swing into action and nip their illegal demonstration from its bud using Public Order Management Act.

The demonstration has not taken place as earlier planned by the vendors and hawkers.

The security agencies have commended the public for not participating in the demonstration.

Security says disrupting normal business operations, forcing everyone to close their shops and go home or burning people’s shops is not a solution or the best approach to arm-twist the leaders.

“When a demonstration happens, the business disruption affects both individuals and the Government and this has an impact on the national economy”.

Security calls upon all leaders to work with their people to ensure that people are sensitized about the existing stalls in city markets and the fact that they have been built to benefit them.

Security continues to urge the public also not to fall into prey to people who want to destroy the peace in the country using illegal means.

Hudu Hussein the Resident City Commissioner maintains that there are “still stalls in USAFI waiting for vendors to occupy them.

City businessman Haruna Seggawa has also availed over 300 stalls in his Market for vendors with a discount of 6 months of non-payment.
