Judicial Officers Urged to Serve with Humility, Integrity

The Judiciary has sworn in 92 Lower Bench Judicial Officers, 86 grade one magistrates, five deputy registrars, and one registrar who have been instructed to serve the public with humility.

The officers were sworn in at a function presided over by Chief Justice (CJ) Alphonse Owiny Dollo at the Judiciary Headquarters in Kampala on August 10, 2023.

In his welcoming remarks, Deputy Chief Justice (DCJ) Richard Buteera has tasked the judicial officers with serving with integrity and humility.

“The task of being a judicial officer is enormous. You must always serve with integrity, without fear, malice, or ill will. You need to incorporate yourself into the culture of the judiciary. You cannot hide under the cover of judicial independence and fail to perform. You should listen to those you work with. You are called upon to serve people with humility,” Buteera said.

Chief Guest Alfonse C. Owiny Dollo emphasised the significance of the Judicial Training Institute’s (JTI) role in enhancing the skills and capabilities of the judiciary’s workforce. He urged the newly appointed judicial officers to actively participate in the institute’s training.

“Each of you should attend the inductions that will be organised at JTI. Observe the core values of the judiciary without exception. You are responsible for your decisions. Nobody should lead you into temptation,” Owiny said.

In a call to action, Principal Judge (PJ) Flavian Zeija has urged the newly appointed members to promptly assume their duties, emphasising their role as dedicated public servants.

“The people you serve are your bosses; it’s not the reverse. Justice shall be done to all people, irrespective of their economic status. You must know the people you serve, and you must understand them,” Zeija said.

The new court officers were cautioned to be prepared to serve all types of people without fear or ill will.
