Kabale is set to benefit with several developments from their natural resource- iron ore in Rubanda once the processing kicks off in May 2019.

While presiding over the grand opening of the International community of the Banyakigezi (ICOB) Uganda Chapter last year, the Prime Minister Rt. Hon Ruhakana Ruganda  announced that government is set to start Iron processing in Rubanda, Kabale district.

He told the ICOB members that the president had contacted potential investors to start up factories in the area. “Meetings were conducted by all Kigezi Mps and a team came and inspected the site where the factory would be set. We approved the site and the only thing left is for investors to come and inspect the place,” said Rugunda.

This has materialized with an Investor coming in this year to construct a processing plant. A new plant is being constructed by Sino Mineral Investment Company in Buhara Sub county Kabale district. It is owned by Chinese Businessman Kong Dong Sheng.

He says the company has so far invested $7.3million in buying land as well as assessing the quality of the iron ore, which he says was found to be goo

Processing of the mineral from Kabale is going to see growth of road infrastructure, employment for the youth and increased rural electrifications.

The building of the factory in Kabale would save people dealing in Iron ore from heavy costs that they have been incurring to transport the mineral to Jinja where they currently transport it to Kamuntu Investments Ltd –the only licensed exporter of iron from Kigezi region.

However, there has been a call to liberalize the mining so that the native miners can also benefit from the business.

Uganda is highly endowed with mineral resources iron ore being one of them in the areas of Butare, Buhara, Muyembe and Nyamiyaga in Kabale district; Kashenyi, Kyanyamuzinda, Nyamiyaga, Kazogo and Kamena in Kisoro district with total resources in excess of 50 million tons which contains negligible sulphur contents.

With the construction of the processing plant in Kabale all these mines are set to benefit and save a lot transportation costs hence more profit for all the miners and more revenue return for Government.
