How Bobi Wine’s Feud Against Buganda Kingdom Will Affect NUP

The ongoing fight against the Buganda Kingdom and Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II by Robert Kyagulanyi, the leader of the Opposition National Unity Platform party, has reached an irreconcilable level.

Peter Mayiga, the Prime Minister of Buganda Kingdom has already ordered Speakers ‘Abogezi’ not to display Bobi Wine’s portrait at any function carried out in Baganda culture like previously.

This stemmed from various utterances by Waiswa Mufumbiro, the NUP deputy spokesperson where he severally attacked the Buganda Kingdom.

While appearing on different television and radio stations, Waiswa said that, as NUP, they do not need Kabaka Mutebi II or the Buganda Kingdom to capture state power in Uganda.

Waiswa also confirmed that once they get into power, NUP will abolish all the cultural institutions, starting with the Buganda Kingdom.

NUP is a party built entirely on a tribal and sectarian foundation, to the extent that almost all the NUP members of parliament come from the Buganda region.

The NUP leader, Kyagulanyi, is also accused of financing social media influencers to insult Kabaka.

To the Baganda and the Kingdom subjects, an attack on Kabaka is an attack on all Baganda. Bobi Wine opening a war on Kabaka is one of the greatest strategic mistakes that will send him and his party into political oblivion soon.

Buganda Kingdom had previously embraced NUP and Kyagualnyi politically as their own, and without doubt, this contributed immensely to Bobi Wine’s performance in the 2021 elections.

Bobi Wine has since proved to be an enemy of the Kingdom by not only fighting and undermining Kabaka but also politically bringing down Kingdom-bred politicians like Mathias Mpuuga and others.

Every kingdom has an interest in national politics, and that is why they groom politicians to push kingdom interests in the central government.

It should be noted that the Obote government abolished kingdoms, but the same kingdoms were later reinstated by President Museveni after capturing power.

Museveni realized the importance of cultural institutions in fostering development and re-instated them. He has continued to promote unity and good working relationships with the Buganda Kingdom and other cultural institutions.

“Bobi Wine has cut the hand that feeds him, and this will put an end to his political career. The same Bobi Wine has miserably failed to secure support in other regions outside Buganda as a result of his hate politics and inciting Baganda against other tribes. Losing Buganda, which has been his stronghold, will have him lose miserably in 2026 and give NRM a soft landing,” said Henry Kigundu, a renowned NUP mobilizer.
