Police in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa are on a manhunt for unidentified thugs who shot and killed six people while they were drinking outside their rentals.

This incident happened late in the night on August 17, 2024, in an informal settlement in Section V6 in Umlazi, south-west of Durban, South Africa.

According to preliminary reports, the deceased were six males aged between 20 – 40 years old age and were killed outside their rented houses by three unknown armed thugs who opened fire at them and they died instantly.

Among the deceased were the landlord of the house, his visitor, three of his tenants, and a passerby who was found on the way.

During an interview on August 18, 2024, KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Col. Robert Netshiunda confirmed the incident and said that investigations are underway.

Netshiunda revealed that these armed thugs first killed the three men who were seated outside their rented accommodation drinking alcohol, then went to the landlord’s house and shot at him and another man he was with in his house. On their way out, they shot and killed another victim on the pathway.

’’It is so sad and traumatizing, and the motive behind these brutal killings is still unknown. However, police are doing their best to catch these culprits,’’ Netshiunda revealed.

He added that all six males died instantly when they were shot at.

Netshiunda said that the spread of illegal firearms and the resulting gun violence remain a major challenge in KwaZulu-Natal because unlicensed guns are commonly used by suspects when such crimes are committed. However, he said that authorities are working hard to address this problem through enhanced law enforcement efforts and community engagement.
