Hon. Tayebwa Announces Special Motion in Honor of Makerere University Ahead of Century Celebrations

The deputy speaker of parliament Thomas Tayebwa has revealed that a special motion will be moved to celebrate Makerere University at 100 years as one of the ways to appreciate the contribution of the University to the development of the country.

The revelation was made during a meeting with top University officials led by the University Council chairperson, Lorna Magara and Vice Chancellor Prof.Barnabas Nawangwe yesterday 17th 2022 at Parliament.

According to Tayebwa, Parliament will move a motion on October 5th, the eve of the century celebrations, instructing the government Chief Whip to coordinate the teams that will move the motion and second it.

“The motion provides opportunity for the appreciation of Makerere University, for maintaining itself as a center of excellence in training and nurturing significant number of human capital that has impacted the different sectors of Uganda’s economy, the region and the world,’’ Tayebwa said.

Makerere University, opening its doors to only 14 students in 1922, has over the years produced 95% of members of Parliament. The motion therefore provides an opportunity to extend the centenary celebrations to the vast Alumni population that currently exists in Parliament and across the country.

The Government Chief Whip, Denis Obua said that Parliament has had several MPs over the years who were former Makerere University guild presidents and these should be in a position to move and second the motion.

“Parliament has a good number of alumni of Makerere University including former guild presidents. They will and should take the opportunity to move a motion that we shall give it the deserving priority,” said Obua

He noted that the alumni of the university should be able to share their journey and leadership while at Makerere and how it has continued to influence their lives and that the well-wishers shall come in later.

Makerere kick-started the century celebrations last year with the climax expected on 6th October at the university’s main campus in Kampala.
