The Ministry of Health has verified a Cholera epidemic in Namayingo District, with about three cases detected. The casualties are being treated at Bukana Health III in the Namayingo district.
According to Emmanuel Ainebyoona, the Ministry of Health’s spokesperson, Namayingo district has reported three instances of cholera, with patients and close contacts being treated at Bukana Health Centre III.
“The District Health Officer noted that samples and victims were taken from three women in Secho village, Bumaleng parish, and Sigulu Island Sub-county who tested positive for the disease.”
“It is said the victims had a travel history and had visited a cholera-endemic area in Western Kenya within 10 days before the onset of the disease. A total of 60 registered close contacts, including 13 children and 47 adults, have been discharged and are receiving home visits from the specialised health workers,” Ainebyoona said.
He added that all measures are in place to sensitise the public to maintain high levels of hygiene to avoid contracting the disease.
He further urged the public to ensure that they boil water and wash hands to prevent further spread.
Namayingo is one of numerous districts that had previously reported cholera outbreaks, prompting the government to initiate a vaccine programme targeting potentially prone districts in 2018.
