Gov’t to give out 240 tractors to progressive commercial farmers

The government through the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries is set to give out a total of 240 tractors to progressive commercial farmers around the country.

Frank Tumwebaze, the Minister of Agriculture says the tractors will benefit large-scale farmers producing on 50 acres and above as selected by Chief Administrative Officers (CAO).

The Minister explained that these tractors will beef up the work being done by the 325 tractors that were given out over the last three financial years.

“Let us agree that we cannot give out tractors evenly to the districts in the country. I may not need a tractor in Kamwenge district because of the terrain, but someone in Karamoja needs it,” Tumwebaze said.

Boniface Okanya, the commissioner for engineering and mechanization services in the agriculture ministry, said the demand for tractors is high, with over 1,000 applications received by the ministry annually from large-scale farmers across the country.

He added that the tractor population in the country stands at 4,782, but that only less than 1,200 are functional.

Tumwebaze said the ministry will work with the Members of Parliament in selecting the farmers, who will then be verified before the tractors are distributed.

The Government wants to ensure that farmers use modern machines in Agricultural production.

According to government, the tractors and implements shall be on regional balancing basis and the target beneficiaries are farmer organizations in the form of but not limited to; registered farmer groups, associations and cooperatives.

In Uganda only 2% of persons are able to access and use tractors for basic farming operations.
