The 4-Acre Model campaign, a modern type of farming introduced by President Yoweri Museveni as part of the Wealth creation initiatives aimed at transforming small-scale farming into maximum productivity has seen top Government Officials lead by example.
According to the President’s plan, the model supports the growing of coffee, fruit crops like citrus and mangoes, pasture for livestock, food crops, and zero-grazing of dairy cattle, poultry, piggery, and fish farming all on a 4-acre piece of land.
By growing a combination of crops and livestock, farmers can generate multiple income streams from a single piece of land, making them more resilient to market fluctuations, climate challenges, and other agricultural risks.
The success of this Four Acre model has largely depended on the involvement of political leaders at various levels, particularly President Museveni who has been a vocal advocate for its implementation.
During his visit to the Teso sub-region, President Museveni toured Vice President Jessica Alupo’s model farm in Katakwi District as part of his broader initiative to assess the impact of government programs aimed at promoting wealth creation and sustainable agricultural practices.
Vice President Jessica Alupo showcased agricultural enterprises including poultry, piggery, fish farming, bananas, and dairy farming, and how she generates approximately UGX 333 million annually thus demonstrating the potential of the 4-acre model.
While in Greater Kibaale districts to launch the same 4-acre model, the President also visited Kamanyire 4-acre model irrigation farm in Kikwaya Kakumiro District belonging to State Minister of Transport Fred Byamukama who earns UGX 50 million per month.
Byamukama’s farm agricultural enterprises include coffee, pineapple, poultry, and a banana plantation. The President appealed to residents to emulate him.
As the model continues to gain attraction and empower farmers across the country, these have taken the President’s message to another level.
During his stop in Serere District, the President visited the farm of a former Taxi Driver Joseph Ijara who listened to his message back in 2011 and is now earning over 600 million shillings per year in net profit from dairy farming, poultry, and manufacturing bar soap, all on just 2.5 acres.
